Everything you need to know as a learner driver in North Somerset, all in one place — from getting your licence to passing your test and beyond.

Before you start — eligibility

A few essentials need to be in place before your first lesson. Here's what to sort out first.

Provisional licence

Apply from age 15 years 9 months; valid from your 17th birthday. You must have this before lesson one.

Eyesight standard

You must be able to read a number plate from 20 metres, with glasses or lenses if you wear them.

Medical conditions

Certain conditions must be declared to the DVLA. Check gov.uk if you're unsure whether yours applies.

The learning journey

From your first lesson to passing your test, here's the path most learners follow.

1. Learn the basics

Vehicle control, moving off, and junctions in quiet areas. See our syllabus.

2. Pass your theory test

3. Build road craft

Roundabouts, dual carriageways, and independent driving until you're consistently test-ready.

4. Pass your practical

These are the standard DVSA and DVLA fees, set by the government — not by us. They're correct at the time of writing but always check GOV.UK for the latest figures.

Passing your test is just the beginning of becoming a safe, confident driver for life.

Your full licence

The DVSA sends your full licence automatically if you opted in at your test. Otherwise apply within 2 years.

Pass Plus

An optional advanced course covering motorways, night driving, and all weathers — and it may reduce your insurance.
